Spotlight on Martha Radice
Martha has been a Board member of Upstream for two years. However, she will quickly tell you that she's been a fan for way longer!
She's a music lover with an ear for contemporary compositions and improvised and experimental music. She met Lukas Pearse, Upstream's current artistic director, shortly after moving to Halifax nine years ago. They both play double bass, although in her view, she's strictly an amateur! When Lukas invited her to join the Board a couple of years ago, she was happy to accept in the hope that she could contribute in some small way to keeping Upstream thriving.
She moved to Halifax in 2009 to take up a post at Dalhousie University, where she's a professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology. Her research specialization is urban anthropology, especially the public culture of cities - things like public art, music scenes, festivals, and public celebrations, as well as the images and symbols that represent cities.
"Halifax has a reputation as having a great music scene, and through my involvement with Upstream I'm getting a better understanding of how it all fits together. I really appreciate that there's room for Upstream's kind of music here as well as more traditional groups like the Chebucto Symphony Orchestra, the community orchestra that I play in."
*This is part of a series where we will be highlighting the work of amazing volunteers who have dedicated so much time an effort to Upstream Music Association. We are grateful for their contribution and we want to showcase them.
