Amy Brandon wins Juno
Upstream Music Association is thrilled to be able to celebrate the success of composer Amy Brandon, as the deserving winner of the 2026 Best Classical Composition JUNO Award.
Amy Brandon first appeared at Open Waters Festival 2016, and her performance and the concurrent release of her debut recording caught the attention of visiting music journalists, resulting in reviews in Excalm! Magazine, musicworks magazine and later, The Wire UK. Her compositions have been performed by numerous ensembles at Open Waters Festivals since, including by Jennifer King, Alkali Collective and Symphony Nova Scotia. She was a participant in Upstream’s NOW.HERE.THIS aleatoric video documentary, and over the past 10 years, her works have been published and performed internationally by renowned adventurous performers, receiving ongoing recognition as a visionary and highly distinct contemporary composer. She has subsequently become a valued mentor to many music composition students in Atlantic Canada at both Mount Allison University Music Department and at the Fountain School of Performing Arts at Dalhousie University.
Amy’s composition simulacra was nominated for a JUNO Award for Best Classical Composition, which was performed by Symphony Nova Scotia and recorded at Open Waters Festival 2023.
