Upstream Ensemble with Kyle Brenders
Kyle Brenders: Kyle Brenders is a young Canadian composer and multi-instrumentalist. His work is defined through the multiple stylistic and idiomatic references used within the process of creation
He currently is active as a leader of a Quartet and Large Ensemble, which exclusively perform his music.
He has studied and performed with Ab Baars, Anthony Braxton, Alvin Lucier, Jean Derome, Caribou, Gordon Monahan, Malcolm Goldstein, Marshal Allen, Dan Snaith (Caribou), James Holden, Kieran Hebden (Four Tet) Evan Parker, Eddie Prevost, Guillermo Gregorio and Gino Robair. Brenders's music can be heard on Spool Records, Bug Incision, Barnyard Records and Porter Records. Kyle has had pieces performed by the FLUX quartet, The BSC, sfSound and the Windsor and Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony. He has performed in the Vancouver Jazz Festival, the Winnipeg Jazz Festival, the Open Ears Festival of Music and Sound, the Guelph Jazz Festival, and with NUMUS concerts. Kyle is an active member of the Association of Improvising Musicians, Toronto (AIMT) were his is Artistic Director of the AIM Toronto Orchestra.
The Upstream Ensemble joins Mr. Brenders in performance with Paul Cram (tenor sax/clarinet), Tim Crofts (piano/synthesizer), Dawn Hatfield (baritone sax/flute), David Burton (drums), Rosanna Burrill (violin), Lukas Pearse (bass/electronics), Jeff Reilly (bass clarinet/contrabass clarinet/clarinet), Jeff Torbert (guitar/electronics), and Rick Waychesko (trumpet).
Also on the slate is Kyle Brenders improviser/composer workshop, a musicians' clinic for the general public on composition conducted by Kyle. It will take place on Wednesday, October 3 from 6:30-9:00 PM in Studio 4, at the Maritime Conservatory of the Performing Arts, 6199 Chebucto Road in Halifax. Brenders will discuss what's composed with what's improvised. How this works, and how a jazz composition can and should change from performance to performance, will be demonstrated with participating musicians. All performers should bring their instruments and be prepared to play. Workshop registration is $25 for participants.
