Open Waters Festival 2017
Open Waters Festival (OWF) 2017
Two Halifax locations, 16 extraordinary events.
At the Sir James Dunn Theatre, Dalhousie Arts Centre and The Company House.
The Open Waters Festival of New and Improvised Music celebrates the confluence of musical traditions, the mixing of the spontaneous and the calculated, the spray between the traditional and experimental.
Bringing together creative music forces from both within and beyond our sheltered harbour, OWF ‘17 celebrates the new year with new music, perfectly timed for helping adventurous listeners chart new courses.
The Festival will feature creative ensembles mixing experimental, jazz and classical genres, bringing together musicians and audiences to enjoy written music and music in the moment. This year we are featuring both Nova Scotian artists in collaboration with visiting artists from the UK, Quebec, B.C. and Ontario. This year, we are partnering with local new music presenters suddenlyLISTEN and Vocalypse Productions, helping to build cooperation between these distinct aspects of our musical community, as well as partnering with Symphony Nova Scotia whose performance of works by Canadian composer Nicole Lizée will end our festival on January 10.

Seamless improvisations move freely in and out of oddly familiar tunes, weaving together subtle melodic fragments, innovative electronic sounds, shifting ambient textures, and classical innuendos with nostalgic songs and samples that titillate the imagination. This is the metaphysical music of now.
Chik White
For over a decade, Nova Scotia Artist Darcy Spidle has used the moniker Chik White for various art projects. His latest efforts centre around the jaw harp, a pancultural, ancient instrument steeped in mystical allure. Inspired by sound poetry, noise, improvisation, Dada, meditation and nature, Chik White's jaw harp explorations aim to conjure visceral experiences through aural minimalism.
